Guest Post: The Power of Words
My name is Rebekah and Luke asked me to be a guest blogger. Now a few things you should know about me is I procrastinate. Like a lot. I only dabble in writing. My problem is I end up with a ton of ideas, but no idea how to begin or carry on. I know it's good to have an outline, character details, et cetera. But Writing may not be my thing. However something that is, is music and movies. Ask me something about Sherlock or Marvel, and I can most probably tell you all the facts, and fan theories about that subject. So I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to stuff like that.
But that isn't what I want to talk about. I want to talk about words. Words can be used to inspire. While many of you write, or just dabble at writing, it can be the spoken words which have more of an influence on people. It's also the unspoken words that can cause an influence. It is because of this that we must be careful of what we say and write. As you put each thought into the phrasing of a paragraph or sentence, such care should be put into what you say out loud to your parents or siblings.
Let me take a short bit of your time to explain why influence is such a big deal in our lives.
Influence is power. That might sound like a strange concept, but if you think deeply about it, the idea begins to make sense. We all have influence over people. When we say something, or even write something, someone is influenced by what we say. Sometimes it's a close friend or a younger sibling. This influence is power which can be used for evil or good. To see examples of this, let's look at two people: Hitler and Jesus.
Hitler had millions of people following him because he was seen as a good leader. His politics became well known and his ideas of a "perfect" German race was accepted. Out of his ideas which were based on other men's research, the Holocaust happened. His words influenced the German people to kill millions of Jews, Christians, gypsies, and others who were not seen as "perfect". Today, some Germans still try to forget that the Holocaust ever happened.
On the other hand, Jesus started out with only twelve followers. He was not popular, yet His words had the power to grow and influence people to this day. Some try to deny Him and pretend Jesus never existed. They claim God isn't real. However, His Word is still read, and people still are influenced to follow Him.
Shows just how words work, huh? The same happens with written words. They can influence people. This might sound gross, but the works of "Fifty Shades of Gray" influenced a woman and her boyfriend to try everything written in it. Other works such as "The Chronicles of Narnia" or "War and Peace" can influence people to become writers. Many poets were born because they read and found a wide fascination with other poets' works.
I hope this comes as a reminder to be careful of what you say and write, and that it is a push for you to be a positive influence on others in any way.
I've enjoyed speaking to you for a little while. I hope you take it to heart.
God Bless,
Rebekah Son
