The Best Online Ambient Noise Generators

Not all of us enjoy music when writing.  But some of us don't like absolute silence either.  Sometimes, an ambient sound mixer is exactly what we need. :)

Basically, an ambient sound mixer or background noise generator is an online tool that plays an ordinary ambient sound, usually one long track or a few tracks playing together.  You can usually mix these yourself, with simple sliders to adjust the sound volume of each track playing.  I find these sound mixers extremely calming, stress-relieving, and (most importantly) they help me concentrate when writing.  Here's a list of my absolute favorite online ambient sound mixers:

#1: Rainy Mood.  Rainy Mood might be the most popular on this list, but in all truthfulness, it's probably my least personal favorite.  This is mainly because I find the sound of a thunderstorm rather depressing, and also rather out-of-place if it's sunny outside.  But this is a very popular and high-quality ambient sound mixer, so I had to include it on my list.

#2: Ambient-Mixer.com.  I only recently discovered this one, and I have to admit, I truly adore it.  There are a LOT of mixes and lists of mixes you can use on this website.  One of my favorites is the Harry Potter mixes, which have loads mixes for many of the various Harry Potter locations (including the common rooms, Hogwarts Express, and many more).  Another of my favorites, the RPG mixes, features a lot of medieval-themed sounds, perfect for that fantasy novel you're writing.

#3: A Soft Murmur.   This website has a lot of different sounds you can play together.  Even though some of the tracks here sound a bit artificial and plasticy to me, I would still recommend checking this one out.

#4: Coffitivity.  Another of the really famous ones, Coffitivity has a handful of tracks that sound exactly like various coffee shops.  I highly recommend this website to anyone who enjoys writing in a coffee shop, or any public area.

#5: Hipstersound.  Similar to Coffitivity, Hipstersound focuses on public and urban ambient sounds.  Hipstersound offers a bit more variety in the type of tracks they offer, including things like "street corner cafe" and "cosy fireplace".  The website itself is beautiful, and has some lovely coffee-inspired backdrops.  I definitely recommend checking this out.

#6: Noisli.   My number-one favorite ambient sound mixer, ever!  In some ways, this is very similar to A Soft Murmur.  Noisli offers a bit of everything, with campfires, coffee shops, white noise, nature sounds, and even train sounds.  One of my favorite features is the seamless color-changing backdrop on the website, which is very soothing.  If you make an account with Noisli, you can set timers and add your favorite track mixes.  There's even a text editor you can use in the website!  Since this is my favorite of all, of course I recommend checking it out right away.

That's all I got for you guys today, but I hope this was helpful!!  They'll be more next Saturday. =)

PS, this is a blog post I pulled out of my short collection of extra blog posts I can use whenever I'm behind.  Because I'm doing NaNoWriMo this month, I'm trying to focus more on that and less on my blog.  Also, I'm kinda breaking the rules as far as the weekly themes I've set up, but I'm learning quickly that weekly themes might not be as helpful?  I'm not sure.  Also, I was supposed to have a survey ready LAST WEEK!  And it's still not ready.  But I will try to have it up for next week's post? Anyway, thanks for reading!

  1. I prefer music when writing...or silence, but then, I never knew there were noises that you could listen to while writing. That seems a little weird, but worth a try. ;)

    1. I usually prefer music or silence, too, but it's amazing how these noise generators come in handy. For instance, yesterday I was writing a formal party scene, with dancing a live music and so forth, and I turned on some jazz music, combined with a coffee shop noise generator, and it sounded perfect for my scene. =D

  2. Most of the time I can listen to music when I write, but then there are the days when nothing sounds good and I can't listen to anything new because then I'll get distracted. Thank you so much for compiling your favorite background noise generators! I'll be sure and check them out.

  4. Dude THANK YOU. I listen to Spotify when writing, but my nano project doesn't like music with lyrics and I feel like one of these would be super helpful. Can't wait to check them out. Thanks for sharing!
